Strength, Sweat, and Smiles: Hiking with My Kids

Spring break this year was one for the books! I took the girls on an adventure to Pinnacle Mountain in Little Rock, Arkansas, and it was an experience packed with fun, challenge, and life lessons. Pinnacle Mountain is a free state park, and while the climb is definitely kid-friendly, it’s also steep enough to push you outside your comfort zone. It took us a total of four hours—three hours up and one hour down—but every minute was worth it.
This hike wasn’t just about reaching the top; it was about teaching my girls the importance of physical fitness and hydration in real time. As we climbed, we talked about how our bodies need water, the dangers of dehydration, and why staying active is so important. It’s one thing to talk about these topics at home, but it’s another to experience them firsthand. They felt the effects of the climb and understood why staying hydrated and physically active matters.
Beyond the physical challenge, the climb was a huge confidence booster—not just for the kids, but for me as well! It’s not every day you find yourself climbing the top half of a mountain at an 80-degree angle. Pushing through the tough moments and reaching the top reminded all of us that we are stronger than we think. Seeing the girls beam with pride at their accomplishment made every sore muscle worth it. And I’ll admit, I walked away feeling pretty proud of myself too!
Even more exciting was knowing that my girls had done something most of their classmates never will. They pushed past their limits and proved to themselves that they could tackle a real challenge. This kind of experience encourages them to step out and try new, different, and challenging things in life—whether it’s another tough hike, a new sport, or even an academic challenge.
Experiences like this remind me why it’s so valuable to seek out physical activities that are both cost-effective and challenging. You don’t have to spend a fortune or push yourself to the extreme, but stepping outside your comfort zone is key. Whether it’s a hike, a bike ride, or a day at the lake, find something that challenges you and your kids in a fun way.
At the end of the day, it’s not just about fitness; it’s about making lifelong memories, bonding as a family, and teaching your children lessons that will stick with them for years to come. So, look around, find an adventure, and go make some memories!
