Social Media and Small Business: A Ranch Mom's Love-Hate Relationship

Running a ranch, raising a family, and growing a small business—it’s a wild ride. And then, there’s social media, the necessary evil that helps put food on the table but also adds another thing to the never-ending to-do list. As The Ag Mom, I’ve learned that using social media to grow a business is like working cattle—sometimes smooth, sometimes chaotic, but always worth the effort.

The Struggle of Timing Posts

One of the biggest headaches of using social media for business is figuring out when to post. Every expert will tell you that timing is everything. But what happens when the best time to post is also the worst time for your schedule?

Most platforms favor engagement-heavy times—early mornings, lunch breaks, and late evenings. But in reality? Morning time means feeding cattle, homeschooling kids, or catching up on ranch chores. Lunchtime? Ha! That’s usually spent wrangling kids, checking on animals, or scarfing down a sandwich before heading back outside. Evenings? That’s family time (or when I finally collapse on the couch). And while scheduling tools help, finding time to create content, write captions, and keep up with trends still feels like a full-time job.

Keywords and SEO: The Magic Words of Marketing

Social media isn’t just about pretty pictures of sunsets over the ranch or a cute video of the kids bottle-feeding a calf (though those definitely help). The secret sauce? Keywords.

Using the right words in your posts helps search engines (and potential customers) find you. Think about what your audience is searching for and incorporate those words naturally into your captions, bios, and hashtags. Instead of just saying, “Beautiful sunset at the ranch,” try something like, “Texas ranch vacation with stunning sunset views.” Small tweaks like these can mean the difference between getting lost in the social media void and actually reaching your target audience.

Free Marketing: Use Every Tool Available

If it’s free, I’m using it. Social media offers so many ways to market a business without spending a dime, but it takes consistency and strategy. Here are some of my favorite free ways to grow our ranch’s reach:

  • Reels and Stories: Short-form videos are king. A quick clip of morning feedings, a behind-the-scenes look at a hunt, or a funny ranch mishap? Perfect for engagement.

  • Hashtags: A mix of trending, niche, and branded hashtags helps maximize visibility. #RanchLife #TheAgMom #TexasGetaway #flyinhranch #rusticvenue

  • Collaborations: Teaming up with other small businesses, ranchers, or Ag influencers for shoutouts, giveaways, or cross-promotions.

  • Groups and Communities: Engaging in Facebook groups, Instagram threads, and online forums related to agriculture, homesteading, and travel.

  • Email Lists: Social media algorithms change constantly, but email subscribers? They’re yours forever.

  • Blogging and Cross-Promotion: Writing posts (like this one!) and sharing them across platforms to drive traffic back to our website.

The Reality: Social Media is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

At the end of the day, social media success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes trial and error, patience, and a whole lot of adjusting. Some posts will flop, others will take off unexpectedly, and that’s just part of the game. The key is to stay consistent, use every free resource available, and not let the frustration keep you from growing your business.

So, fellow ranch moms and small business owners, what are your biggest struggles (or wins) with social media marketing? Let’s swap strategies and keep lifting each other up!
