From Chick to Chicken Dinner: Raising Poultry at the Flyin H Ranch

Life on the ranch isn’t just about cattle, hayfields, or weekend events—it’s also about the cluckin’ good work we do with our birds.
At any given time, Flyin H Ranch is home to more than 75 chickens. About half are raised for meat, and the other half are our hardworking hens who bless us daily with fresh eggs. From sunrise crowing to sunset roosting, these birds are a vital part of our daily rhythm—and a great hands-on lesson in agricultural sustainability.
We get many of our chicks through a wonderful program connected to Texas A&M. When the county places bulk poultry orders for 4-H poultry projects, we often jump in and order a set of 25 for ourselves. At just 75 cents per bird, it’s an incredible opportunity to start or grow your flock affordably while supporting youth agricultural education at the same time.
Once they arrive, we raise them right here—on pasture, with care, clean water, and plenty of sunshine. When the meat birds reach the desired processing weight, we harvest them ourselves. It’s not just about knowing where your food comes from—it’s about doing it the right way. Clean, humane, efficient, and full of respect for the life we’ve raised.
Over the years, we’ve developed a full system for raising and processing poultry that works for our land, our family, and our community. And now, we’re sharing it with others. Because that’s what agriculture is all about—teaching, growing, and feeding the next generation.
But here’s something that surprised even us…
Our egg-laying hens, who faithfully supply the ranch with fresh eggs, have recently taken it upon themselves to expand the flock. Much to our joy, they've started to breed, brood, and—just three days ago—hatch chicks. This wasn’t part of our original poultry plan. The goal was simple: to make sure our families never ran out of meat or eggs. But nature had its own plans, and we’re here for it.
Right now, we have eight tiny chicks living in our house. Yes, you read that right—in the house! They’re warm, chirpy, healthy, and thriving. Once they’re big enough, they’ll graduate to the chick pen in the barn. After that, they’ll move to the pullet stall, where they’ll stay until they’re strong enough to handle weather changes and the big move to join the flock.
Watching this natural cycle of life unfold right in front of us has been nothing short of magical. It's a reminder that even with all our plans and systems, Mother Nature still has a few surprises up her sleeve.
So from our flock to your family table, remember this: when you raise it yourself, it tastes better. Not just because it’s fresh, but because it’s filled with purpose.
