The Ag Mom: Take Time for You

Motherhood is one of the most sacred and rewarding roles we can have, and I know we all cherish our kids beyond words. Being a mom is a blessing and an honor—it’s a calling we hold dear. But let’s be real: motherhood can sometimes feel like an all-consuming identity. Somewhere between the diaper changes, 4-H meetings, and late-night school projects, we find ourselves wondering, “What happened to me?” Here’s the thing: just because you’re a mom doesn’t mean you have to lose who you were before you became one. It’s okay to take time for yourself. In fact, it’s necessary. And this isn’t about being selfish or shirking responsibilities—it’s about ensuring you’re the best version of yourself for you and your family.

Seasons of Sacrifice

We all go through seasons where our hobbies, dreams, and desires get put on the back burner. (I had five years with three kids in diapers and pull-ups simultaneously—I get it!) Motherhood often demands that we give 110% of ourselves 110% of the time. But as our children grow and our seasons shift, there’s a window of opportunity to reclaim parts of ourselves that may have been set aside.

The Importance of "You" Time

Numerous studies, blogs, and professionals all agree: taking time for yourself isn’t just a luxury; it’s essential for your well-being. Time for yourself rejuvenates your spirit, reduces stress, and reminds you that you’re more than the sum of your responsibilities. It’s a chance to rediscover the unique, beautiful individual you are—because that person still exists.

A Personal Perspective

I’ve always been an outgoing, busy, athletic person who thrives on an action-packed schedule. I love dressing up, going out, enjoying ranch life, and scuba diving (fun fact: I’m a certified diver!). But ask me how many dives I’ve been on since getting married and having kids? Zero.

For 12 years, “Lindsay” was on the back burner. Everything was about my kids, and honestly, that’s how it should have been for those early years. But as my kids have grown and entered school, I’ve discovered little ways to embrace myself again. I’m not jetting off to dive expeditions (yet!), but I’ve started indulging in small joys—like buying fun hats. Yes, I’m the crazy hat lady at church and school, and I love it! Picking out outfits that make a statement or spark a conversation has become my way of reconnecting with the vibrant, creative part of me.

It’s Not Just About You

Taking time for yourself isn’t just good for you—it’s good for your family. Your kids need to see you as a whole person, not just “Mom.” They need to see that you value yourself and your interests because it teaches them to value their own. When you’re happy and fulfilled, it reflects in your parenting and your relationships.

A Season Within a Season

Motherhood is a season of life, but within it are smaller seasons. I’m in one now where I can work on the family business, write blog posts, and muck stalls during the day. It’s a far cry from the diaper-and-nap schedule of years past, and I’m making the most of it. I know that one day, when the kids are grown, I’ll have time to scuba dive in the ocean with them by my side. But for now, I’m embracing the little moments of “me time” that this season allows.

Buy the Hat

So, momma, this is your permission slip. Take the dive. Buy the hat. Pursue the hobby. Don’t let guilt or outside expectations stop you from taking care of yourself. You’ve given your all to your family—and that’s amazing. But don’t forget that you’re also a beautifully unique individual, fearfully and wonderfully made. Your kids need to see that side of you, too.

From one busy mom to another, I’m screaming it from the rooftops: it’s okay to take time for you. Scratch that—it’s necessary. So go ahead, embrace who you are. You deserve it.

Inspired in part by Psalms 139 (read it, it will do you some good...favorite verse in the whole chapter you a fearfully and wonderfully made.)

I also could not write this post without being inspired by the artistic creations of Traci Wallace. Traci is my hat designer extraordinaire and also a fun loving working mom who knows a thing or two about taking time for herself.
